"Self Portrait" 1969

Philip Clairmont (1949-84) artfully manifested himself in 1970, at only 20 years of age… with a sensational first solo show in Christchurch, which included his first major self-portrait (below). It was originally bought by his painting teacher at the time, Bill Sutton; the painting then became part of (& remains in) the BNZ art collection. In Clairmont’s short but stellar career he managed to produce a body of powerful paintings and prints that many consider to be the finest example of Expressionism in New Zealand. His work is represented in all the main public galleries (and many prestigious private & corporate collections) and his major paintings often sell for over $250,000 NZD.
